Portland's Wasabi Paddling Club teams to compete in World Championship Races

    MaiMai News - PORTLAND, OR, July 23, 2008 -- Four teams from Wasabi Paddling Club will be traveling to compete in the 6th Club Crew World Championship races at the end of July. An anticipated 100 Wasabi members and supporters will be traveling to take part in this event. These four teams - Wasabi Burn (Premier Mixed), Wasabi Grand Masters (Mixed), Grand Masters Women and Wasabi Team Huge (Premier Women) will be competing against teams from across the globe in their respective race divisions.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 31 and races will take place August 1 - 3 The races will be held on the Teluk Bahang Dam in Penang.

Wasabi teams practice year round on the Willamette River. In preparation for competing in Malasyia, some teams and individual paddlers have added additional practice sessions, fitness boot camps, and workouts with personal trainers to their regular practice schedule.

About Wasabi Paddling Club

Wasabi Paddling Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the participation in, and promotion of the national and international amateur sports of dragon boat and outrigger canoe racing. Their charter also includes assisting other paddlers in the Portland and surrounding communities to develop into strong, competitive teams through sponsorship and coaching. Wasabi consists of more than 300 members, ranging in age from 14 to 77, forming eight dragon boat teams and six outrigger canoe teams.
